Born in Philadelphia to Albert (Avram) and Miriam Ferleger, I grew up as a child of Holocaust survivors. My mother was one of last to leave the Warsaw Ghetto and was in Maidanek, Auschwitz and other concentration camps, and my father was from Chmielnick, a small town, which was destroyed; he spent the balance of the war living and hiding in a small hole dug under a stable. That background has both inspired my work for those treated as less than first class people and has granted the blessing of my Jewish heritage and religion.

My family and friends are most important, beginning with my beloved wife Dayle, and our children, Anya, Avram and Anat. Our children are a blessing and inspiration. Sara and Rob I have been privileged to see into adulthood. Dayle is a rabbi and nationally recognized teacher, consultant and speaker regarding aging, death and spirituality. She teaches and directs the programs in chaplaincy and aging at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, and recently published Jewish Pastoral Care: A Practical Handbook from Traditional and Contemporary Sources.

I've had the good fortune to travel to internationally to study disability and public health issues, including visits to Cuba, China and Iceland. I've also been lucky to see a bit of Canada, much of the United States, the British Virgin Islands, and some parts of my hometown as well. If you plan to be on Martha's Vineyard, let me know.
